Clyde Riders: maximize your Web PR!

Tonight I watched my usual assortment of 6 o'clock news, and saw a great story about a group of BC women who ride Clydesdale horses. They are the lone Canadian representatives at the 2005 Rose Bowl half-time show! The audience for this program is reported to be about $400 million. A little Canadian pride naturally occurs when I see this kind of story.

They need $60K to get all the girls and the horses (they weigh a ton, and there are 12 of them). They've raised about half that so far. Perfect, get on TV and the province's largest newscast too. Right at the end they give out the website address.

Their website is not bad for a group like this. Usually these kind of websites are made on the cheap by a relative. That might be the case but some attention was given to design and layout.

However, it's the small details that can sometimes hurt a site. I noticed right away that the title tag on their home page didn't say anything about who they were, or their name. Here's what it said instead:

<title>ccrlayout.gif</title>

"ccrlayout.gif" is an image file referenced by the authoring software. A broken title tag is too often a way to slow down traffic to a website. Google won't give you the attention you need, and bookmarks just don't work.

It's a good idea that if you are serious about using the web to market, that you get someone on board who pays attention to the small stuff. The small investment you make can pay big dividends later.
