Phisher Kings

Never fails. The very official sounding Domain Registry of Canada (DROC) keep sending me notices of expiring domains. Now they're even sending them 6 - 8 months before the domain expires! Must be that people are catching on to them.

DROC, which has an American version of itself called Domain Registry of America, are "phishing" for my business. Phishing is part of the risk that the internet brings. Unsuspecting people are lead by very official looking correspondence (DROC never cheaps out on paper stock) to transfer their domains over to DROC as their registrar. Is it the end of the world? No. Is it a nuisance? Yes.

DROC and companies who practice phishing have no shame. As internet users we have to be on guard. If you own a domain name, be wary of emails and letters that you receive reminding you that you need to renew. Check them against your original registrar or any previous documentation. If you are still not clear then call someone whose advice you can count on. Hopefully that's your web services provider.
