RSS feeds challenge us to rethink the web

Vancouver blogger and technologist Darren Barefoot provokes interesting discussions on his personal blog. A recent post by DB about RSS feeds got us thinking about where this tool is taking the web.

RSS is an evolving, and still overly complicated tool - it’s only a matter of time before terms of use statements are updated to reflect the use of feeds. Even website design is becoming less important as we become accustomed to browser through news aggregators.

There are many who still think it is not important to have a feed, whereas my ability to keep up with the web relies upon my Bloglines (a free web-based RSS reader we recommend).

RSS will evolve into a more integral part of the browsing (and media consumption) experience. Lately we've wished that we could track our favourite TV and radio programs with RSS. Maybe Apple TV or Tivo could adopt an RSS standard? How about iTunes?

Eventually this form of 'pull technology' will heavily influence how we consume information. For now we recommend that everyone tries out some kind of news aggregator service, such as Bloglines.
